Cipher starts lateral gas pipelines aimed at up to 2.5 GW of bring-your-own generation

On September 3, Cipher Digital Inc. (Nasdaq: CIFR) said it has begun developing lateral pipelines (short spur lines that connect a site to a nearby main gas line) at multiple sites to deliver natural gas for bring-your-own-generation capacity (on-site power plants the campus owner or partners build instead of waiting only on utility delivery). Cipher says the laterals will connect its sites to nearby natural-gas supplies and enable on-site generation of up to 2.5 gigawatts of electricity. It plans to work with power providers to develop and operate generation at these sites, and frames the pipeline work as a step toward making new power available to the sites before the end of 2027. Management says the capacity is intended to support additional leasable industrial-scale data center capacity for high-performance-computing workloads, and that Cipher plans to seek grid connection for the generation in an effort to contribute to local grid stability. The release does not name the sites, gas-pipeline counterparties, generation equipment vendors, signed offtake (a contracted buyer of power or hall capacity), capital cost, or financing for the laterals or generation.

Why it matters

Bring-your-own-generation is one path around Electric Reliability Council of Texas interconnection timing for new AI and high-performance-computing halls. Starting laterals is an early physical step, but up to 2.5 gigawatts of generation by end-2027 remains a plan until sites, partners, permits, and capital are disclosed.
