ERCOT schedules October 6 workshop on Senate Bill 6 large-load curtailment mechanics
On September 2 at 2:04 p.m., ERCOT Market Notice M-A090226-01 announced a workshop on October 6, 2026, on proposed deployment mechanics, registration requirements, and draft revision requests for large-load curtailment tied to Texas Senate Bill 6 (SB6), the 2025 legislation that added large-load rules to the Public Utility Regulatory Act (PURA). ERCOT says the session covers curtailment for net-metering projects under PURA section 39.169 (PUCT authority to require large loads co-located with existing generation to cut consumption in certain events) and backup-generation rules under section 37.0561(e) (ERCOT authority to require large loads whose backup generation serves at least 50 percent of load to curtail grid take when needed to mitigate Energy Emergency Alert conditions). The notice also references the PUCT mandate for a large-load demand management service under section 39.170. Agenda items include a proposed Large Load Curtailment Manager, registration process, and draft Nodal Protocol Revision Request, Nodal Operating Guide Revision Request, and Planning Guide Revision Request language. ERCOT is seeking stakeholder input before formal filings.
Why it matters
Campus owners planning ERCOT-connected AI and high-performance-computing load—including bring-your-own-generation and net-metered designs—need clarity on how curtailment and registration will work in operations. Draft protocol and guide language from this workshop will shape interconnection and operating assumptions.

Risks
- Workshop materials and draft revision requests are not yet final filings; design choices can change after stakeholder comment.
- Curtailment rules for net-metered and backup-generation sites may affect commercial terms for co-located campuses even when Batch Zero classifications clear.
